It is widely believed that these compositions came about when Sir Hallgr. sál. Pétursson came to a farm and asked a woman to give him a drink; she had a restless baby in her cradle and therefore could not leave the child. It is said that the priest then offered to rock the child while the woman fetched the drink, and then sent her this poem for the child, in exchange for the drink. Whether Sir Hallgr. wrote these compositions or not, they reveal the author's great spirit and strong religious fervor.
