Some poems and verses by Sigurður Norland.
This is Sigurður Norland's only book.
Sigurður Norland (March 16, 1885 – May 27, 1971) from Hindisvík on Vatnsnes was a pioneer in nature conservation in Iceland. He was a priest in Tjarnarprestakalli but chose to live in Hindisvík rather than sit in the Tjörn pest control center. Sigurður was a great enthusiast for the protection of seals and whales and in 1940 had the seal colony in Hindisvík protected. Sigurður was an enthusiast for horse breeding and developed and bred the Hindisvík breed.
Sigurður graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1907 and sailed to Scotland and stayed there for a while. From there he went to the Icelandic Settlements in Canada and stayed for a while in Denmark on the way back. He then went to the Theological Seminary and was the last candidate to graduate from there. Sigurður was then ordained as an assistant pastor in Vopnafjörður and stayed there for a year or so until he received the Tjarnarpriest call at Vatnsnes. He lived in Hindisvík with his mother but then bought the land at auction in 1919 when his mother stopped farming. From 1919 Sigurður was pastor at Bergþórshvól for several years but then applied again for the Tjarnarpriest call and was pastor there until 1955.
Sigurður wanted Hindisvík to become an urban area with a fishing industry and a transshipment port.
Siguður was a great linguist and scholar. He graduated in 1959 with a BA in Greek from the University of Iceland, at the age of 74. Sigurður lived in Hindisvík until the end of his life. He was unmarried and childless.
