Should one point out one main work in the great production to Aasen, Norsk Ordbog med dansk Forklaring is strong. This was an expanded and reworked edition of Ordbog over det norske Folkesprog (1850). The book has around 40,000 vocabulary words, which is almost twice as many as the 1850 word book. Oppslagsorda was på landsmål and ordforklaringane på dansk as in 1850, but Aasen had worked a lot to make the explanations more precise and råkande, and oppslagsorda was normerte streng etter landsmålnormalen he had set up in Norsk Grammatik (1864).
The aim of the book was to "present the Ordforraad, which is really understood and subsequently developed among the people themselves". He wanted to present the Norwegian language in such a way that it could sit alongside "andre Landes Sprog" and be appreciated, both by Norwegians and foreigners. Aasen took Korkje with foreign words, noisy words or rare words, but that he saw as the central part of the uncommon vocabulary in Norwegian. This is how a foundation stone was laid in the mission work to Asen.
Aasen started the dictionary after the grammar school was finished in 1864, but the work took much longer than he had expected. Boka appeared in volumes from 1871, and in 1873 it was finished. This time there were some reports in a foreign newspaper. In Norway, it was mainly reported by target people, who had very much to say about the work. Norsk Ordbog is still widely used by language researchers and language enthusiasts, and together with Symra, it is the book by Aasen that has sold the largest number of copies.
