A new legal preface book by Einar Arnórsson.


Einar Arnórsson was born at Minna-Mosfell in Grímsnes in 1880. His parents were Arnór Jónsson, a farmer there, and his wife Guðrún Þorgilsdóttir, a housewife. In 1907 he married Sigríður Þorláksdóttir Johnson, a housewife. Their children were: Ingibjörg, Guðrún, Áslaug, Ásgerður, Hrafnhildur and Logi. Einar completed his matriculation examination in 1901. He first studied Nordic grammar at Hafnarháskóli, but dropped out. Law degree from Hafnarháskóli in 1906. Senior legal adviser in 1907. Supreme Court lawyer in 1945. Honorary doctorate in law from the University of Iceland in 1936.

Lecturer at the Reykjavík Law School 1908—1911. Professor of Law at the University of Iceland 1911—1915. Appointed Minister of Iceland on 4 May 1915, dismissed on 4 Jan. 1917. Then became professor of law again and held that position until 1932, although he was dismissed in Oct. 1919 and was political editor of Morgunblaðið and Ísafold in the winter of 1919—1920. Rector of the University of Iceland 1918—1919 and 1929—1930. He was also Director of Taxation in Reykjavík 1922—1928 and chairman of the Equalization Committee, serving on the committee until 1932. Supreme Court Justice 1932—1942. Appointed Minister of Justice and Education on 16 Dec. 1942, dismissed on 16 Sept. 1944, but assigned to continue his duties temporarily, was released on September 21. Supreme Court Justice 1944—1945.

Elected to the Welfare Committee in 1914. Served on the Sovereignty Committee of the Althingi from 1917 to 1918. Served on the Federal Law Committee in 1918 and then on the Danish-Icelandic Advisory Committee until 1934. Appointed to the Landsbanki Evaluation Committee in 1927. In 1925, worked with Hannes Þorsteinsson on the study of Icelandic documents in the Danish State Archives and on agreements for their transfer to Iceland. On the Reykjavík City Council from 1930 to 1932. Appointed to the committee in 1934 to prepare new legal legislation. President of the Historical Society from 1935 to 1955. Served on the Árna Museum Committee from 1936 to 1942.
Member of Parliament for Árnnesingi 1914—1919, Member of Parliament for Reykjavík 1931—1932. Minister of Iceland 1915—1917, Minister of Justice and Education 1942—1944.

A prolific writer and author of numerous books and articles on law, Icelandic history, etc. His main publications are: The Legal Status of Iceland. The Treatment of Public Matters. The International Legal Association of Iceland and Denmark. The Legal History of the Althing. The League of Nations. The Althing and the Struggle for Freedom 1845—1874. The Árnesþing in the Age of Settlement and History. He was responsible for the publication of the Althing Books and other important source books on Icelandic law and judgments, etc.
He edited Fjallkonunn 1907. Ísafold 1919—1920. Morgunblaðið 1919—1920. Skírni 1930. Blönda 1936—1939. Söga 1950—1954. Tímjarrit lógfræðinga 1951—1953.
