Lárus Jónsson was born in Ólafsfjörður on November 17, 1933, and died on November 29, 2015. His parents were Jón Ellert Sigurpálsson, a captain there, and his wife Unnur Þorleifsdóttir, a housewife. Lárus' wife was Guðrún Jónsdóttir, a housewife.
Lárus graduated from the Icelandic School of Economics in 1954 and received a degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland in 1960.
Lárus was an employee of the Icelandic Meteorological Office while also studying at university. Municipal treasurer in Ólafsfjörður 1960–1968. Employee of the Economic Institute based in Akureyri 1968–1970. Managing Director of the Northern Quarter Association 1970–1971. Managing Director of the Icelandic Fisheries Bank 1984–1987. Independent professional work 1987–1988. Managing Director of the Shrimp and Scallop Producers Association 1988–1991. Managing Director of the Icelandic Students' Loan Fund 1991.
Lárus was chairman of Garðar, FUS in Ólafsfjörður 1962–1968. On the board of the Union of Young Independents 1964–1972. Municipal representative in Ólafsfjörður 1966–1970 and in Akureyri 1970–1974. Chairman of the board of the Songwriters' Sales Organization 1975–1980. District director of the Rotary movement in Iceland 1967–1968 and on the board of Rotary Norden 1974–1984. Attended meetings of the North Atlantic Parliamentary Association 1980–1984.


Member of Parliament for Northeastern Iceland 1971–1984 for the Independence Party.
