Hákon was born at Vaðbrekka in Hrafnkelsdalur on July 13, 1935, the son of the couple Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir and Aðalsteinn Jónsson who lived there at the time. Hákon studied at the District School at Laugar in Reykjadalur in the winter of 1952-1953, graduated as an engineer in 1960 and graduated from the State Police College in 1973. He worked as a driver, among other things, he was an ambulance driver for a long time. For a while he was an engineer on ships and for years a policeman and customs officer and in the latter part of his life he was a forester in Húsir in Fljótsdalur.
