Hugi Pétursson Hraunfjörður Hugi was born in Hraunprýður in Hellissandur on July 17, 1918, the son of Sigurást Kristjánsdóttir from Vindás in the Eyrarsveit region and Pétur J. Hraunfjörður from Hraunsfjörður in the Helgafellssveit region. This was one of the most difficult years to have befallen Iceland this century.
Hugi was well-spoken and published 7 books of poetry. The first, Skuggi draumsins, was published in 1958, followed by Ákväði in 1972, Galdra-Rönkurímur in 1981, Þokan in 1983, Vorljóð in 1984, Liljan in 1986 and Gömul spor og ný in 1988. In addition, he wrote several short stories that appeared in newspapers and on the radio.
