Páll Jónsson was born in Lundur in Stafholtstungur on June 20, 1909, the son of Ingigerður Kristjánsdóttir and Jón Gunnarsson, who were farmhands there. His father Jón was a long-time migrant and his mother Ingigerður was a farmhand on many farms in Borgarfjörður.
At the age of 17, Páll moved to Reykjavík and lived there ever since. He worked for a long time as a librarian at the Reykjavík City Library, but was also one of the pioneers of the Icelandic Travel Association, a nationally renowned librarian and photographer.
Páll's photographic collection contains an estimated 20,000 photographic films, taken all over the country. He and his friend Þorsteinn Jósefsson collaborated on photography in many ways, and photography became a considerable source of income for Páll in due course. Many of Páll's photographs appeared in the Icelandic Travel Association's Yearbook, as well as in magazines and newspapers. Páll had a keen eye for subject matter and was never one to waste time waiting for the right moment.
Páll worked in book publishing with the publisher Örlygur Hálfdanarson and had a hand in many of the magnificent books that his publishing house published in the 1960s and 1970s. Páll eventually gave his photo collection to Örlygur, who then gave the collection to the Skagfjordur County Archives in 2005.
