The Passion Hymns. By Hallgrímur Pétursson.
The Passion Hymns are one of the key literary works of Icelandic cultural history. They are performed every year both on the radio and in churches, and sung on various occasions. The hymns were first published in Hólar in 1666 and are one of the few literary works by Icelandic authors that have been continuously available on the book market since their first publication.
Marður Árnason's edition of the Passion Psalms, designed by Birna Geirfinnsdóttir, breaks a new chapter in the long history of publishing hymns, as it is not just a traditional edition of the hymns, for in addition to the hymns, the scholar's detailed explanations are published.
Each stanza is accompanied by a commentary on the words and content, and in addition, the rhetorical structure of the psalms is explained by specifying where in the structure of each psalm the stanzas stand, whether they are textual or exegetical verses, prayers or addresses. In front of each psalm is published the contemporary text of the clergy manual that Hallgrímur and his other colleagues in the clergy in the 17th century relied on, which contains the summary of the New Testament gospels that Hallgrímur followed in the content of the Passion Psalms. At the end of each psalm, its content is summarized in a commentary and an explanation of the style. Further explanations of the Passion Psalms, their reception and issues of controversy in their interpretation and understanding of their theology are then inserted between the psalms.
Instead of a comprehensive preface or epilogue, an attempt is made to connect the subject matter of each hymn more closely to a broader exposition of the work as a whole, the society from which it emerged, and its more than three centuries of interpretive history.
