Gylfi Þorkelsson was born on May 24, 1961 at Laugarvatn in Árnessýsla, the son of Ragnheiður Ester Guðmundsdóttir (1927-2018), a housewife for most of her life, and Þorkel Bjarnason (1929-2006), former horse breeding officer at the Icelandic Horse Breeding Association. He is the youngest of seven siblings.
Gylfi has published two books of poetry. Guðað á glugann (2006) and Úr dagbókinni (2006). He composes occasional poems and is an active poet on his own website and on the Facebook page Boðnarmíði. He is a member of the Hreppamanna Men's Choir and tries his best to follow his colleagues in 1st bass. (www.gangleri.is)
