From the Homeland. Poem by Guðmundur Friðjónsson.
Guðmundur was born at Silalæk in Aðaldalur, where his father, Friðjón Jónsson, was a farmer at the time. He later moved to Sandur and took over the farm from his father. Guðmundur received his school education at Möðruvallaskóli from 1891 to 1893, and that was his only education. From then on, he became a farmer and an active writer, and was often featured in newspapers and magazines in the country. For many years, he had the custom of getting up from his farm and giving lectures on various national issues or the ideas and ideals that he held dear. He was sometimes considered harsh towards people and issues, as he was of such a temperament that he knew best not only to fight against the harsh nature of the country.
His first book of poems was published in 1902 and was called Úr heimahögam. The following years Guðmundur kept busy, writing short stories and short stories, composing poems and publishing some of these here and there. He wrote essays on various subjects in newspapers and magazines. In 1904 he published animal stories: Undir beru lofti, (but he then published another book of animal stories in 1938: Úti á víðelvangi). In 1907 his longest story, Ólöf í Ási, was published. This story received mixed reviews, and was considered messy and even immoral in parts. Guðmundur did not write longer stories, as his immersion in writing was such that he must have had difficulty taking on writing projects that required a long stay.
Throughout his life, Guðmundur cultivated his distinctive style and language, which to a certain extent is reminiscent of and akin to the ancient language of poetry. His eloquence and fluency were often admirable, very often clever, but admittedly sometimes far-fetched.
