Árni Ibsen was born in Stykkishólmur on May 17, 1948, but moved to his maternal grandparents in Akranes in the fall of 1952 with his mother and two older sisters and grew up there. Árni completed a general teacher's qualification from the Icelandic Teachers' College in 1970 and a matriculation examination from the same school in 1971; he graduated with a BA in drama and English literature from the University of Exeter in England in the spring of 1975. Árni taught English at Ármúlaskóli in Reykjavík from 1970-72 and English, drama and art history at Flensborgarskóli in Hafnarfjörður from 1975-79. He worked for many years as a drama and literature consultant at the National Theatre and also as a translator and director, but since 1995 he has been a freelance writer. He held a number of positions of trust, including serving on the board of the Icelandic Playwrights' Association from 1989 and being its chairman from 1998 - 2004.
Árni published several books of poetry, including Vort skarða líf, Úr hnefa and A Different Silence, a large, bilingual collection of poetry on book and CD that was published in England and the United States in the fall of 2000. His most recent work was the poetry book Á stóku stað með éjnöt kimarót, which Bjartur published in the summer of 2007. He is the author of a number of plays that have been translated into ten languages and staged in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Germany, Hungary, Estonia, Ireland, England and the United States, while here at home all the major professional theaters have performed his works. He also wrote film scripts and various materials for radio and television, series, short films, plays and New Year's Eve parties. (www.bokmenntaborgin.is)
