From the depths to Iceland. Julius Schopka, U-52 and World War I. Recorded by Illugi Jökulsson.
Julius Schopka was 24 years old when he arrived in Iceland in 1920. He had been in the German navy during the recent World War, on the crew of U-52, a submarine that traveled the ocean depths and attacked dozens of ships. The war was brutal, and the young boatman experienced many scary things – but also had good times, like when he saved a small kitten from a sinking fishing boat. The Icelandic ship Flora was one of the ships that the submarine sank, but the crew and passengers survived.

After Schopka settled in Reykjavík, he became one of the German front-runners in Iceland, welcoming German warships that arrived in port. There he met men who would rise to the highest ranks within the Third Reich, but he himself was a staunch opponent of the Nazis. He became an Icelandic citizen, a well-respected merchant, and had children and a wife.

Illugi Jökulsson tells the eventful story of Julius Schopka, basing his lively narrative on his own memories of the war and a large number of other sources. At the same time, the course of World War I is traced, the history of the German war fleet is told, and the main events of the tumultuous years after the war are reported.
