Jónas was from Kaldbak in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla. He graduated from the Agricultural School at Hólar in Hjaltadalur. Jónas moved west across the sea in 1913, settled in Mikley and married Jakobína Sigurgeirsdóttir, a priest at Grund in Eyjafjörður. However, he always identified himself with his birthplace, Kaldbak.
