American physicist Steven Weinberg is one of the most prominent scientists of our time and is credited with introducing the worldview of modern physics to the public. Weinberg is one of the pioneers of so-called particle cosmology and was awarded the Nobel Prize with two colleagues in 1979 for a theory that provides a unified description of the electromagnetic force and the weak force. The First Three Minutes has enjoyed constant popularity since its first publication in 1977 and is still considered to provide a clear picture of the cosmology of modern physics.
Weinberg has a unique knack for explaining complex topics in an accessible way without being guilty of inaccuracies or oversimplifications, and for example, he does not use mathematical formulas anywhere in this book. Nevertheless, he manages to give the reader a clear picture of his subject, the infancy of the universe. With the discovery of the so-called microwave background, it became clear that the universe is expanding and that its origins can most likely be traced back to the Big Bang. Under these circumstances, three of the four fundamental forces – the electromagnetic force, the strong force that holds neutrons and protons together in the nuclei of atoms, and the weak force – are believed to have appeared as three sides of the same phenomenon in an extremely dense and hot primordial state. Weinberg describes the rapid expansion and cooling of the first moments after the Big Bang, as particles contracted to form first light atomic nuclei and then gradually the matter that exists in the world today. He paints a picture of the state of the universe back to the first hundredth of a second after the Big Bang and describes what it was like at every moment thereafter, according to the laws and developments that particle physicists believe occurred during the expansion of the universe.
Weinberg has added an afterword to the book, written in 1993, in which he discusses the developments that have occurred within cosmology since its original publication. In addition, the book includes glossaries and mathematical chapters for the reader's convenience.
