Voices at night. Poem by Helgi Sveinsson.
Reverend Helgi Sveinsson was born on July 25, 1908, at Hvítsstaðir in Mýrasýsla County.
Completed his matriculation examination in 1930, his teaching qualification in 1934 and his theology qualification in 1936. Children's teacher 1934–37. Pastor at Háls in Fnjóskadalur 1936–40 and at Arnarbælispristakall from 1940 until the end of his life. Lived in Hveragerði from 1942. Teacher there from 1943 at a junior high school, the Gardening School at Reykjar and Hlíðardalsskóli. On the county council from 1946.
Helgi was an idealist and believed in freedom, equality and brotherhood. He was a joy to be around at gatherings of friends and had an easy time writing. Helgi was known for his good speeches and wrote excellent poetry, but he is best known for his occasional verses, many of which became nationally famous.
Voices at Night is Reverend Helgi's first book of poetry.
Loves
Our young lips met,
Both wishes came true.
Smiles and silent oaths worked.
The fires in the sky burned.
I saw a warm and delicate stirring
your heart in secret tears.
The sunny summer of your childhood
slept in your golden hair.
The kings were high, tall, -
called the days of life and power, -
arrived in clouds from the east
after waking night's dreams.
Our swans were cast aside:
the words that were on my lips. -
The earth sailed through summer nights
sleepless over the deep blue.
