Captain Iceland is the first Icelandic superhero to appear in an Icelandic comic book and was drawn by Kjarnó (Kjartan Arnórsson). He started out as a supporting character in the comic book Svínharði Smásál in Þjóðviljan, but later began to live an independent life.
Two books have been published about Captain Iceland, Árás Illhuga published in 1990 and Forsetaslagurinn æsilegi published in 1996. Both books were published by Fjölva.
In the book Forsetaslagurinn æsilegi, Captain Iceland's archenemy, Illugi ógeð, has disguised himself as a loving patriot and is running for president of Iceland. The nation is fooled, but Captain Iceland sees through the deception and takes action.
