The foxes at Hornstrandir. Text and photographs by Pál Hersteinsson.
The fox is the only native land mammal in Iceland. It has been here since the end of the Ice Age. Until 1994, the law aimed to eradicate foxes in Iceland, and therefore the emphasis was on hunting foxes throughout the country. However, with the amended law, it is recognized that the fox is a natural part of Icelandic nature and should be protected. However, protection is not the same as complete protection, and the fox is only protected in a few places in Iceland. The largest reserve is in Hornstrandir.
