In 1627, one of the most devastating events in Icelandic history occurred, the so-called Turkish Raid, when violent invaders from another world captured around 400 Icelanders and forcibly transported them south across the seas to slavery in the Barbary Islands.
One of the group was Guðríður Símonardóttir, a young seafaring woman and mother in the Westman Islands. Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir accompanies Guðríður on her long journey to the slave ship in Algeria, tells of her nine-year stay there and describes the journey north again until she sees Iceland again with Hallgrímur Pétursson. Many other captured Icelanders are also named and told their stories in the book, which provides a glimpse behind the scenes of the Arab and Islamic world in the 17th century.
Behind this extensive work of fiction lies six years of research and travel to historical sites in Algeria and Morocco, Mallorca, France, Germany, England, Holland and Denmark. Although little is known for certain about Guðríður's incredible life, there is a great deal to be found about the spirit of the age and the way of life of people at this time. The author draws on this wealth and creates a solid, adventurous and exciting story of the captivity and liberation of a strong woman.
