Thirteen tears in a heartwarming way. Compiled by editor Jón Helgason.
The wanderers - the wayfarers - who roamed the land in past centuries are a strong and deep feature of Icelandic folklore - these people, who "had no other bed for themselves than that which nature had prepared for a wayward man on a hill or a ravine, nor a hearth except the spot warmed by the sun's rays". These men were the poorest and most destitute of all in the world, yet the nation remembers some of them better than many of the rulers who divided and ruled and had all their affairs in their hands.
Jóhann Beri was one of the most famous representatives of this class of people - a man of extraordinary humanity, whom cruel fate and the storms of human passions alienated all charm and drove his steps towards ruin. (Cover text).
