Hannes Pétursson was born in Sauðárkrókur on December 14, 1931. He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1952 and received a master's degree in Icelandic studies from the University of Iceland in 1959. He studied Germanic studies at the universities of Cologne and Heidelberg from 1952 to 1954. Hannes worked in publishing at the Cultural Fund's Book Publishing House from 1964-1976, was the publishing director of the Cultural Fund's Small Books from 1959-1969 and the Cultural Fund's Encyclopedia from 1972-1976. He served on the editorial board of Skagfirðingabókar, the annual publication of the Skagfirðinga Historical Society, from 1966-1973.


Hannes' first book, Kvæðabók, was published in 1955. He has since published a number of books of poetry and prose, as well as collections of short stories, non-fiction, articles and biographies. He has also translated, among other things, Franz Kafka's The Shift from German in 1960. Hannes has received numerous awards and recognition for his work over his long career. He was elected an honorary member of the Icelandic Writers' Association in 1991 and received the Icelandic Literature Prize in 1993 for his poetry collection Eldhylur. Hannes was named an Honorary Fellow of Álftaness in 2006.
