Our Gunnlaug years. Grete Linck Grönbech tells the story.
Grete Linck Grönbech, a painter, was married to Gunnlaugur Scheving, a painter. They met at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen 1928-31, then moved to Iceland and settled in Gunnlaugur's hometown, Seyðisfjörður, where they lived and worked on their art until 1936 when they moved to Reykjavík. Greta Linck went abroad to Denmark in the summer to stay with her family for a few months. But she did not return and she and Gunnlaugur did not see each other again after that.
Grete Linck describes life at the art academy in the first chapters of the book. But the bulk of the book is a credible description of Icelanders during the years of crisis, their lives and lifestyles, as they appeared to a young foreign woman who was raised in the formality of the Danish middle class and came here unknown to everyone except her husband.
Many Icelanders who are still alive or have recently passed away are involved here. (Cover text).
