Ólöf was born on Sauðadalsá in Vatnsnes and grew up there on the peninsula. She studied midwifery with Jónassen, a doctor in Reykjavík, and then sailed for further studies in Copenhagen. After returning home, she worked as a midwife in Reykjavík for five years, then married Halldór Guðmundsson and they moved north to Hlöður in Hörgárdalur, near the farm that Ólöf is always known by. She lived there for over thirty years. After that, she moved to Akureyri and in her last years she lived in Reykjavík.
