The Theological Seminary was founded in Reykjavík in 1847. The school was intended to educate priests for work in Iceland. It was founded following the closure of Bessastaðaskólin and the establishment of the Lærði skólin in Reykjavík in 1846. The Theological Seminary was founded a year later. Until 1851, the Theological Seminary operated in the building of the Lærði skólin in Þingholtan. The course lasted two years, primarily intended for those who did not have the opportunity to attend theological education at the University of Copenhagen. The first director of the school was Pétur Pétursson, later Bishop of Iceland. When the University of Iceland was founded in 1911, the Theological Seminary, along with the School of Medicine and the School of Law, was merged with it and became the Faculty of Theology of the University of Iceland.
