The poet Jakobína Johnson was born in Hólmavaði in Aðaldalur in South Þingeyjarsýsla in 1883. She was the daughter of Sigurbjarn Jóhannsson, a farmer and poet in Fótaskinn and Hólmavaði who was considered one of the better poets of Þingeyjar in his time.
Jacobine moved west with her family at the age of five and later lived in Canada and the United States. She grew up in Argyle, Manitoba, Canada, graduated as a teacher in 1904, and then taught for several years.
Jakobína married an Icelandic man of East Icelandic descent, Ísak Jónsson. She was a housewife in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Victoria on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, but the couple lived for most of their lives in Seattle, Washington State, USA, from 1909.
Jakobina translated a considerable amount of Icelandic literature into English, such as the plays Lénharð fógeta, by Einar H. Kvaran; Nýársnóttina, by Indriða Einarsson, and Galdra-Loft by Jóhann Sigurjónsson. She also translated a number of Icelandic poems, which appeared in the anthologies Icelandic Lyrics, Icelandic Poems and Stories, and in 20th Century Scandinavian Poetry, and Northen Lights.
