The story of Hnífsdalur is the story of the people there from settlement to unification with Ísafjörður in 1971. The book describes the turbulent history of the land, from the ownership of the Vatnsfjörður people in earlier times to the influence of the locals and the Ögur people.
A large fishing industry developed in Hnífsdalur from the mid-19th century onwards, and a large village with almost 500 inhabitants was formed. The catch values that came ashore there were among the highest in the country, and human life was flourishing.
It also tells the story of class conflicts between workers and landowners in the 1930s. These led to a long-running legal battle in the so-called Hnífsdalsmál between the Ísafjarðarkrat and Hálfdán Hálfdánsson, the district governor of Búð, who was accused of vote rigging, and had a profound and lasting impact on the country's political life.
Kristján Pálsson was raised in Ísafjörður. He has worked as a fisherman and shipowner, as a local mayor in Suðureyri and as mayor of Ólafsvík and Njarðvík. He then sat in the Alþingi for eight years. After a successful career in shipping and politics, Kristján completed a master's degree in history at the University of Iceland.
