Guðni Jónsson was born in Gamla-Hraun in Eyrarbakki, the son of a poor couple who had 17 children in total. He grew up in Leirubakki in Landi until the age of twelve, then went to work and later rowed for two seasons but then managed to break into education, attended night school in Reykjavík, completed his secondary education from Flensborg in 1921 and his matriculation examination from Reykjavík High School in 1924. He then studied at university, first in theology but then began studying at the University's Nordic Department and taught while studying. He received a master's degree in Icelandic studies in 1930 and his master's thesis dealt with the Settlement, the comparison of the Settlement manuscripts with each other and with other sources.
Guðni taught at the Reykjavík Secondary School from 1928 to 1945, then became principal of the same school. He was an active scholar, especially in the fields of genealogy and history, and wrote a number of works, including his doctoral thesis, Bólstaðir og búendur í Stokkseyrarhreppur, which was published in 1952 and which he defended a year later. He also wrote the works Bergsætt, Sógu Hraunshverfis á Eyrarbakki, Stokkseyringa sógu and other works. He also edited a number of ancient works, including Íslendingasagn I-XII, which were published in 1946-1947, Fornaldarsagna Nordurlanda and many other works. He also edited the works of Brynjúlfur Jónsson frá Minna-Núpi and other folklorists, and published Íslenska sagnaþattre og þjóðsögur I-XII.
