A story in letters. Episodes from the life of Reverend Sigtrygg of Núpur. Compiled by Finnur Sigmundsson.
Sigtryggur graduated from the Lærði skólinn in 1894 and a professional degree in theology from the Presbyterian School in Reykjavík in 1897. He taught children and adolescents in Eyjafjörður and in Hálshreppur from 1878-87 as well as during his student years, was a children's teacher in Reykjavík and elsewhere from 1897-1905, founded and directed the Folk High School in Ljósavatn from 1903-1905, founded the youth school in Núpur (later called the District School in Núpur) in 1906 and was its principal from its founding until 1929.
Sigtrygg's first wife was Ólöf Júlíana Sigtryggsdóttir, but she died in 1902. Sigtrygg's second wife was Hjaltlína Margrét Guðjónsdóttir, a teacher, and their sons became nationally known, Hlynur, a weather station director, and Þröstur, a captain in the cod wars of the 1970s.
Sigtryggur was appointed parish priest in the Svalbarðs- and Presthólaprestaköllir parishes in 1898, granted Þóroddsstaður in Köldukinn and Lunderbrekka in Bárðardalur, was granted Dýrafjarðarþing in 1904, and was appointed provost of the Vestur-Ísafjörður diocese in 1926.
Sigtryggur upheld the ideals of the youth associations about cultivating the people and the land. He worked for a long time in the Order of the Knights Templar and, together with his second wife, established the Skrúður flower and tree garden in Núpur. They began cultivating the garden in 1905, and it was officially opened in the autumn of 1909.
