History of the Kjalarness diocese. Compiled by Jón Þ. Þór.
The Kjalarness diocese covers the Gullbring and Kjósarsýsla counties and the Vestmannaeyjar islands. Until 1940, Reykjavík, Seltjarnarnes and Kópavogur were within the boundaries of the diocese. Natural and geographical conditions have left their mark on the history of the diocese and its inhabitants. Agriculture has always been practiced there, but fishing has also left a strong impression on the life and work of the people. The main churches and educational centers in the diocese have housed many well-educated teachers and scholars. Various centers of culture and religious life have existed in the Kjalarness diocese since the early centuries, and many innovations in church work, both congregational work and administrative organization, have seen the light of day.
