The Story of Guðrún Ketilsdóttir. A monograph on the life of an 18th-century maid. Compiled and documented by Guðný Hallgrímsdóttir.
The story told in this book is based, among other things, on a preserved fragment of an autobiography entitled The Life of Guðrún Ketilsdóttir. Guðrún was born in 1759 and her story is probably the oldest preserved autobiography of an Icelandic working woman from the 18th century. In the story, Guðrún openly talks about her life in Eyjafjörður and her difficult marriage to an unfaithful husband. The narrative is full of sincere and colorful descriptions of people and issues. The book discusses her life and extremely narrow class position and how she manages to gain a foothold in the difficult times of the peasants. The sad end of her life highlights the tragic in the lives of thousands of Icelanders at this time. (Bókatíðindi 2013).
