Pétur Gunnarsson was born on June 15, 1947 in Reykjavík. After graduating from Reykjavík High School in 1968, he went to study abroad in France and completed a degree in philosophy from the Université d'Aix-Marseille in 1975.


Pétur's first book of poetry, Splunkunýr dagur, was published in 1973, but earlier poems by him had appeared in the journal Mál og menningar. The novel Punktur, punktur, komma, strik was published in 1976. Film director Þorsteinn Jónsson made a memorable film based on the book, which enjoyed great popularity. The book was the first of four about the protagonist Andri, and the last Andri book, Sagan öll, was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1987. Pétur has written several more novels, two of which have been nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize, Hversdagshöllin in 1990 and Myndin af Íð þóðarson in 2000, in addition to the first volume of his biography of Þórberg Þórðarson, ÞÞ – Í páttíðtarlandi. The entire biography was recognized by Hagþenki in 2009. Pétur has also translated and his translation of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert received the DV Cultural Award in 1996. He has also translated parts of Proust's work, In Search of Lost Time. Pétur has published numerous articles on literature and culture in professional journals, written about folk and cultural issues in newspapers and given talks in various forums. (www.forlagid.is)
