The Soul of My Jón. A play in three acts by Mrs. Hólmfríður GC Sharpe.
The Soul of My Son is the first play by an Icelandic woman to be published. Hólmfríður moved westward at the age of 15, to Milwaukee in the United States, and the play takes place there among Icelandic settlers, more specifically “in the living room of Eiríkur Andersson” in 1892.10 Matthías Jochumsson met Hólmfríður during his travels westward and wrote an obituary about her
in the women's magazine Framsókn, signed MJ There he says that she was "a poetess and a brilliant writer" and adds in parentheses: "(in English)". It's as if he can't sign that she was a good writer in Icelandic! He also doesn't mention the play, which had just been published, and perhaps he didn't like the language in it, the Western Icelandic colloquialism that the author puts so pleasantly into the mouths of his characters, and which had not been done before.
