Sowers of the Sands. A history of land reclamation in Iceland 1907-2007. Compiled and catalogued by Friðrik G. Olgeirsson.
In July 1907, state-run land reclamation began. At that time, vegetation had declined greatly since the settlement due to natural disasters, weather conditions and the poor treatment of the people in the country. Many areas had been severely affected by wind and sandstorms, and it was expected that the damage would be irreparable in many places if nothing was done. Although the first sand reclamation workers had poor equipment, they bravely faced the sandstorms and had unwavering faith in their mission. The same can be said of those who came after them. The book reviews the progress made over the past hundred years and tells the story of land reclamation and vegetation protection in words and pictures. It discusses the projects of the Icelandic Sand Reclamation Project up to 1965 and the Land Reclamation Agency, which was established at that time. The book contains about 260 photographs, drawings and maps. Most of the images are large color images. A vivid and graphic account of how Icelanders turned defense into offense, stopped man-made flooding, and clothed the land in the beautiful colors of vegetation once again. (Bókatíðindi 2007).
