Sexually transmitted diseases and prevention. Instructions for the general public, especially sailors, by Guðmundur Hannesson.
A good copy, signed to Ingólfur Gíslason.
Strange as it may seem, alcohol can actually be considered one of the main causes of sexually transmitted diseases. Most, if not most, of the men who contract sexually transmitted diseases have been exposed to them in drunkenness, not being completely sober. ..... Alcohol now has such an effect on most men that they feel they are becoming great men, hesitation and shyness disappear, and as the drinking party increases, the whispering voice of conscience and caution is heard less and less. However, all kinds of passions want to be aroused, and finally they drive the young and promising boy, blind and weak-willed, into the arms of the first prostitute who comes his way. Eyes are usually completely closed to the fact that she may be ugly, depraved and sick, sometimes a kind of idiot (it is believed that about 1/3 of the dissolute city girls are actually half-idiots)
Having affairs with women outside of marriage seems at first glance the most natural remedy for those who cannot marry. Unfortunately, there are many things to consider. If promiscuous girls are sought, the young man is bound to meet the weakest girls, spoil his entire innermost emotional life, and make himself a worse man, although it is not excluded that this may well lead the inexperienced into miserable marriages.
When adolescent boys reach puberty and the gonads begin to function, semen is usually released spontaneously at intervals of a few weeks. In healthy men, this almost always happens during sleep, and they usually wake up with dreams about women and the like. This usually means nothing more than that the adolescent boy has now become a fully developed man.
Various massages or irritations of the genitals can cause the semen to be released, and this is accompanied by sexual pleasure. Accident, trickery, or bad example can lead boys to this, and then it becomes a habit or even a great passion. A similar habit can also affect women. If this is done a lot, it often makes men weak, lethargic, and sometimes shy and unproductive. This, among other things, leads to them having the greatest remorse and even mental anguish, being afraid that they are ruining their health or committing some mortal sin - but still cannot always stop this habit! All this can sometimes lead to a kind of weakening of the soul and body, depression, or some kind of nervousness, especially if they are teenagers or have done a lot of this.
No one was too busy for the sailors, although they sometimes got lost in some strange places. It is easy for the settled countryman to live simply without any great extravagances. There are few temptations that confront him. Again, it is only human and natural, although the sailor is tempted to make a happy day when he finally reaches port.
