The International Saga Conferences are conferences or congresses on Icelandic and Norse ancient literature and related topics, held every three years.
The initiative for the ancient history conferences came from Professor Hermann Pálsson in Edinburgh, who organized the first conference, which was held there in 1971. The next one was held in Reykjavík two years later, and since then the conferences have been held every three years. Most often, a specific field of study is taken up and specifically discussed. The ancient history conferences are both an academic and social forum for scholars in these fields.
Conference proceedings have generally been printed (the first is multi-issue). They often only published a selection of lectures from the conference in question, while others often appeared later, for example in journals. In recent years, conference proceedings have been so-called preprints, i.e. they are published before the conference or session begins and the lectures are often in a shorter version.
