The Satyricon was written in Latin around 5060 AD. It is believed that Gaius (Titus) Petronius, one of the courtiers of the Emperor Nero, wrote the story, which is now preserved in fragments. The story tells of the wanderings of the companions Encolpius and Aeschylus through the sumptuous banquet halls and the humblest slums of the Romans.
