Seyðabrévið is a Faroese law, which was put into effect on June 28, 1298 by Hákuni Duke Magnusson. The log was written in Old Norse by Bishop Erlandi, and is the oldest preserved writing in the Faroes. Brævið is one expansion of the Gulatingslógini (landlov) written in 1274 by Magnus Lagabøte. Bishop Erland was bishop in the Faroes from January 25, 1269 until 1305, when King Hákun 5 Magnusson deposed him due to demands from the Faroes, when Bishop Erland demanded too much tax, and demanded that work be done to build the new Magnus Cathedral.
Two copies of the Seyðabrevin are found today. One is at the Tjóðarsavn in Tórshavn, and the other is at the university library in Lund (Svøríki).
In contrast to Føroyingasøga, which is written in Iceland, Seyðabrévið is written in the Faroes, and is one of the better sources for what time the Faroese were.
