The Last Fjölnirman. The Life of Konráður Gíslason. Compiled by Aðalgeir Kristjánsson.
The name of Konráður Gíslason (1808–1891) has long been shrouded in the consciousness of Icelanders. In his younger years, he participated in founding the magazine Fjölnir together with Jónas Hallgrímsson, Brynjólfur Pétursson and Tómas Sæmundsson and became the undisputed leader of those Icelanders in Copenhagen who were guided by the ideas of the Romantic movement. Konráður became a professor at Hafnarháskóli in 1848 and held that position until 1886. Among his students were therefore numerous Icelandic intellectuals in the second half of the 19th century and his direct influence was felt well into the 20th century. The author has long been involved in research on the era of the Fjölnir.
