In the first part, the author of the book, Páll Skúlason, rector of the University of Iceland and professor of philosophy, seeks to explain some of the basic principles of morality as he sees it and to analyze the difficulties that he believes beset our morality. In the second part, an attempt is made to explain some of the basic principles of ethics and to shed light on its problems as an independent discipline. In the third part of the book, the riddle of morality is grappled with as it pertains to an individual who feels compelled to make decisions on moral grounds. The main task in the third part is to seek an answer to the question on what grounds it is possible to make moral decisions.
