In the fall of 1940, two young Icelandic doctors, the couple Friðgeir Ólason and Sigrún Briem, set off for the United States to study medicine. After four years there and in Canada, they returned to Iceland; he with a doctorate from Harvard, she having just completed her undergraduate year working in children's hospitals. The stay in America had seemed like an adventure and had quenched their great ambitions, but what has changed everything and shaped them more than any other experience on this long journey is the birth and upbringing of their three children. Sigrún and Friðgeir are truly symbols of the bright hopes of Icelandic medical science when they board the Goðafoss in the fall of 1944, but they are also parents, convinced of what their most important role is and will be in the near future.
Sigrún and Friðgeir – A Travel Story is a story from World War II that touches on many different aspects of Icelandic history in the 20th century, but it also draws on almost countless events from the history of American society. The book tells, among other things, about Sigrún and Friðgeir's encounters with poverty and violence in the country's big cities, such as the Harlem district of New York City, popular culture and the rise of powerful institutions and companies in American society, the accumulation of wealth and the ever-increasing emphasis on advances in science and technology. For the couple's life in America was not just tied to the world of medical science, but also revolved around running a household, the supply of new household appliances and the demand for domestic help during war. And their story certainly complicates the picture that has been drawn of the role of housewives in the 1950s in the United States, attitudes towards black working women, gender relations and the role of fathers in raising children.
Sigrún and Friðgeir – A Travel Story is based on letters and diaries that the couple kept from the time they sailed to the United States in the fall of 1940 until they returned home to Iceland from New York in the fall of 1944. The author also uses numerous photographs to depict scenes and precious moments in the family's life, while the story of the events aboard the Goðafoss after it was hit by a torpedo from a German submarine is also told from a new perspective, with Sigrún and Friðgeir, and their three children, in focus.
