Sigurður Þórarinsson. Portrait of a man. By Sigrún Helgadóttir.
Sigurður Þórarinsson's biography by Sigrún Helgadóttir tells the story of one of Iceland's leading scientists, whom every child knew. Sigurður had just returned from studying geology when a major eruption occurred in Hekla in 1947. He studied and explained it and then all other volcanic eruptions that followed in this country for as long as he lived. Sigurður received international attention for his scientific work, not least for developing a special discipline, ash stratigraphy. He received many lucrative offers of employment abroad but did not want to live and work anywhere but in Iceland. He knew the country, the volcanic eruptions, the glaciers and the strata, but also the history and culture, and aroused the nation's interest and knowledge of the country's nature and the importance of nature conservation. Sigurður was also a popular songwriter and many of his texts are still sung, such as Vorköld í Reykjavík or Þórsmerkurljóð Sigrún Helgadóttir is a teacher and biologist, specializing in nature conservation and environmental education. She has written educational materials as well as books about national parks and the Icelandic folk costume.
