Silfurtungglið originally premiered at the National Theatre in 1954 and is the author's first attempt at creating his own playwriting style, mocking the absurdities of modern life. The story follows Lóa, a housewife and mother with a beautiful singing voice who enjoys singing to her newborn son. Lóa is "discovered" by the dubious Feilan, the manager of the Silfurtungglið nightclub, and he makes her a symbol of purity and originality, an image he can sell to the alienated people who frequent the nightclub. But in this environment, her talent is unmatched and her scenes are humiliating. Feilan introduces Lóa to Mr. Peacock, the CEO of Universal Contracts Inc., in the hope of making her an international star, but the CEO is content to alienate this gullible young woman. In the end, her humiliation is complete, her son has died, her husband has left her, and she is thrown out of the entertainment industry like any other piece of trash.
