Autobiography. Childhood of the Þingeyingi Merchants' Association. From the life of Jakob Hálfdanarson. Supervised by Pétur Sumarliðason and Einar Laxness.
"The father of the cooperative movement in Iceland". These words are attributed to Jónas Jónsson from Hrifla about the author of this book, Jakob Hálfdánarson, a farmer in Grímsstaðir by Lake Mývatn and the first director of the Þingeyingi cooperative (b. 1836, d. 1919).
It was a difficult decision for a grown farmer to make a living and move to Húsavík. Jakob had decided to move to Húsavík and devote himself entirely to the work that had been entrusted to him, to lead a newly established cooperative, the first in Iceland.
Jakob Hálfdánarson's autobiography describes these events and is a historical document about the efforts of the Þingayskar banda to pave the way for domestic trade. The book also contains two of Jakob's essays on trade as well as his genealogy. Numerous pictures adorn the book. (Cover text).
