The Independence Movement. By Jóhann Hafstein. Lecture given at the secondary schools in Reykjavík and Akureyri 1963.
Independence views society as a collection of individuals. But this collection must be one unbroken, organic whole in order to continue to be a society.
If one hand rises against the other, then social bonds are broken, society disintegrates.
Similarly, if the classes of citizens rise up against each other, then society collapses to its foundations.
But the benefit of one class is the benefit of the whole - and the collapse of one class is a loss, or perhaps the collapse of the whole, as the case may be. In full certainty of the validity of this natural law, the Independence Party has adopted the motto: Class with class.
