Indriði Einarsson (April 29, 1851 – 1939) was a pioneer in Icelandic drama and a trained economist. He was born and raised in Húsabakki in Skagafjörður. His mother Euphemia was the daughter of Gísli Konráðsson and his father Einar was the son of a priest from Glaumbær in Skagafjörður. Indriði's paternal grandmother was a sister of the Reynistaðar brothers. Indriði was the first Icelander to graduate in economics and was the auditor of the national accounts for a long time, until he became an office manager at the Ministry of Finance. He was a playwright and his most famous plays are Nýjársnóttin (published 1907), Dansinn í Hruna and Hellismenn. Indriði also translated William Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale (unpublished play) and Henrik Ibsen's The Vikings of Hálogaland (which he translated with Eggert Ó. Briem) (published 1892). He was instrumental in the founding of the Reykjavík Drama Society in 1897.
He was a member of parliament for Vestmannaeyjar from 1890 to 1891. Indriði was often a guest of Jón Sigurðsson at his home in Copenhagen.
Indriði was married to Märta Guðjohnsen and had six daughters with her: Eufemia, Emilia, Guðrún, Märta, Lára and Ingibjörg; and two sons, Einar and Gunnar, who took the surname Viðar. Einar was the father of Jórann Viðar, a composer, but died young. Gunnar Viðar became the director of Landsbanki Íslands. Ingibjörg married Ólafur Thors, who became the Prime Minister of Iceland.
