The Seven Masters' Tale. By Halldór Kiljan Laxness.
This new story by Halldór Laxness from his childhood takes place mostly in the short period between his two previous books, On the Meadow at Home and I Was a Young Man; that is to say, it takes place around 1918-19. Of course, the author's ideas from other times permeate the narrative, although they are usually clearly distinct from the time it describes. First and foremost, the author is talking about Reykjavík as the Eden of his youth, before his wonder turns into life experience. This is, of course, a very peculiar place, where all the people, known and unknown, are characters in the mind of the aspiring novelist and therefore irresponsible for their actions towards him, no matter what. The narrator is describing a genuine storyteller in his youth by having him tell his own story: if the people were completely real and the author an everyday participant in their lives, he would have to demand full historical responsibility from them personally. I dare say that this difference is the crux of the story.
