Sigmar was born in Hof in Nordfjordur on August 15, 1918, the son of Torfi Hermannsson and Jóhanna Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir, who lived in Nordfjordur, in Hrafnabjörg in Hjaltastaðaþinghá and most recently in Skeggjastaðir. Sigmar completed his matriculation examination from Akureyri High School in 1940 and his master's degree in theology from the University of Iceland in 1944.
He was ordained to the Skeggjastaðir parish in the North Múla diocese on June 18, 1944, and served there for 44 years, until August 1988. He also served as deacon in the North Múla diocese and later the Múla diocese for 23 years, often serving in neighboring parishes, as well as in numerous other religious positions.
