Sigurbjörn was born on the Spáná River in Unadalur in Skagafjörður. His parents were Stefán Ásmundsson and his wife, Guðrún Pálsdóttir, who lived for the longest time in Miðhúsagerði in Óslandshlíð. Sigurbjörn was a shoemaker, living in Siglufjörður and later in Kópavogur. He worked for a long time in the poets' association Iðunni, known for his poetry and poetry programs on the radio. Skóhljóð is Sigurbjörn K. Stefánsson's only book.
