The Shadow Boy or the Outcasts. A play in five acts by Matthías Jochumsson.
Second printing, revised and corrected.
Skugga-Sveinn, was first published in 1864 and was then called The Outcasts. The play is believed to have been written during the Christmas holidays of 1861, when Matthías was in the 5th grade of the Latin School and the schoolboys performed the play in February 1862.
Shadow-Sveinn was Matthías' first play. He said of its composition:
I made up or sloshed or screwed up a play during the Christmas break. It's called The Outcasts and is in 4 acts with some poetic rubbish here and there. I got bored with that Danish "comedy" that the ladies here say, so I took it on, and although this piece of mine is actually insignificant, it was a huge hit; I was shouted onto the stage, and the crowd clapped me, so I got lost.
