Mykhailo M. Kotsjubinsky (1864-1913) is the most famous poet of Ukraine, and Shadows of the Fathers is his first work to be translated into Icelandic. The setting is a peasant village in southwestern Ukraine - in the Carpathian Mountains. This is a story of love and peasant life where the majestic nature plays as big a role as the people themselves. There is a short distance between dream and reality, and although the story is poetic and intimate, it is very dangerous in other ways. It is interpreted entirely from the perspective of the primitive children of nature. Kotsjubinsky, who was a rebellious patriot, fanned the flames of freedom of his oppressed people and preached the ideal of a better society where no one would be rich and no one poor, but he avoided coloring the story with his own opinions like a hot fire. In encyclopedias, he is considered the greatest Ukrainian writer and is said to achieve his greatest success in short poetic stories, such as Shadows of the Fathers.
The translation by Guðmundur Daníelsson and Jerzy Wielunski is beautiful Icelandic and conveys the content of the story well. Guðmundur is considered one of our most artistic contemporary authors, while Wielunski is Polish, a poet and journalist, a unique linguist and has especially made a point of learning the languages of small islands and minority groups and ethnic groups that are surrounded by large language communities. The collaboration of these partners on the translation of Shadows of the Fathers seems like a clever interpretation of a great work of art.
